Elijah Slocum Dining

The concept of a separate room for dining and unique furniture for that room is a fairly modern development. In the middle ages it was the custom to entertain great hosts of guests so the dining was in a very large room, or great hall. Guests were frequently seated on benches or stools at trestle tables.

While the general population ate in the kitchen, seventeenth century families of any standing normally dined in the parlour. Seldom did these rooms contain furniture specific for dining. Rather, tables were brought forward from the side of the room to set up in the center when necessary.

In the eighteenth Century, the English began to favour a more formal arrangement for dining and designed rooms specifically for this purpose. These were the forerunners of what we now refer to as our dining rooms.

Elijah crafts furniture from each of these periods. The following pieces are small representation of the range of dining furniture we have created for our clients.
