Europe was devastated in the period after WWII, particularly in France.   In the Auvergne region of central France, to provide pocket money, children gathered straw and brambles on their way home from school and wove baskets in the evenings.  They sold the baskets in local markets at the weekends.

The children shaped the straw into long round lengths that were bound by long bramble stems. They then carefully stitched the lengths together to shape the baskets.

This hand-woven wicker basket is a large example of one of those baskets. A warm brown with rich patina, it is lovely to look at and could serve many purposes.
